Il Pioppo nero, Populus nigra, è una pianta legnosa dal portamento arboreo appartenente alla famiglia delle Salicaceae che può raggiungere dimensioni ragguardevoli, anche 25-30 metri di altezza, ma non particolarmente longevo, poiché vive fino a 90-100 anni. Originario delle regioni asiatiche occidentali e dell'Europa centro-meridionale, presente anche in Nord Africa, il Pioppo nero è diffuso in Italia in tutto il territorio, dalla pianura fino a 1200 metri di altitudine.

Native to the western Asian regions and central-southern Europe, also present in North Africa, the black poplar is widespread in Italy throughout the territory, from the plain up to 1200 meters above sea level.
